Identifying Suspicious Packages and Envelopes

Warning signs of suspicious envelopes and packages:

Labeling
  • No return address or strange return address
  • Postmarked from a city or state that does not match return address
  • Marked with restrictions("Personal", "Do not x-ray", etc)
  • Not sent to specific person
  • Excessive postage
  • Handwritten or poorly typed address
  • Misspellings of common words
  • Not addressed to specific person
  • Incorrect titles or title without name

Appearance

  • Oily stains or discoloration
  • Strange Crystallization visible on wrapper
  • Excessive pakaging material (tape, string, etc)Rigid or bulky
  • Lopsided or uneven

What if you receive a suspicious envelope or package

  • Handle with care - do not shake or bump
  • Isolate package/letter immediately
  • Do not open, smell, touch or taste
